'Victoria Brass' Concert at Sacred Heart Cathedral

OrganBrassConcertDr van Emmerik was a member of the Strathfieldsaye Municipal Band and grew up in the midst of Church music, regularly attending services at Sacred Heart Cathedral where his father, Bill, was Director of Choir Music for ten years.

Dr van Emmerik's love of music has taken him all over the world. He has held positions as Low Brass Professor, Director of Bands, Director of Music and Head of Music in the USA and Australia, and was the principal euphonium player with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force in London, as well as all Royal Australian Navy Bands. He is the euphonium, tuba, low brass professor and ensemble conductor at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University.

The Victoria Brass Concert will feature virtuoso organist and distinguished composer, Dr Calvin Bowman. Born in Ararat, Dr Bowman, like Dr Van Emmerik, is a regional Victorian who has carved out a stellar international career in chamber music. A graduate of the University of Melbourne, he is the first Australian to graduate with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale University and is a former Senior Lecturer in Composition and University Organist at the Australian National University. He has been internationally acclaimed and awarded for his compositions.

The vocalist and narrator for the evening will be Matthew Little, who migrated to Australia from the United Kingdom in 2019. Matthew's musical career started as a boy chorister and bass trombonist at Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra.He graduated with an Honours Degree in Music from Trinity College of Music in London, before joining Royal Air Force Music Services in 1992, retiring as a Director of Music when he moved to Australia. He was awarded two Commendations in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for the Anthem in the Park events. Matthew is currently Direcotor of Performing Arts Events and Ensembles at Salesian College, Chadstone.
