Behind every drop – keeping our tap water flowing

Cathedral Parish Cluster’s Care for Creation Ecology Group recently learned more about their water supply from Coliban Water’s John McDonald.

The Coliban Northern System supplies the towns of Bendigo, Axedale, Huntly, Raywood, Sebastian, Heathcote and Tooborac. Vyonne McLelland-Howe fills us in …

Making sure everyone has access to clean water – and dealing with the wastewater that goes down our sinks and toilets – is a massive, complex job. We recently invited local water authority, John McDonald from Coliban Water, to speak at our Care for Creation Ecology Group, and were given a glimpse into just how much goes on behind the scenes.

At Coliban Water, they’re not just thinking about today, they’re planning for fifty years ahead, using climate and water records which go back over a century. It’s not just about pipes and pumps either. They’re looking at smarter ways to save water, reuse it, and respond to the challenges of a drying climate. For those of us living in a country like Australia, where water is often scarce, it’s a reminder that this is a precious resource that isn’t endless, so how we use and value water matters. It’s easy to take it for granted, but the more we understand what goes into keeping it flowing, the more we realise how much care it deserves.

Did you know?

  • The cost of providing a constant supply of potable water and maintaining sewerage services to Coliban Water consumers is 100% customer-funded. Your water bills pay for your water and sewerage services only, not for a profit for Coliban Water.

  • Coliban Water’s target is to attain net-zero carbon by 2030 and to reduce its annual carbon emissions baseline by more than 33,000 tonnes by 2030.

Next Meeting – 11 June at 10:00 a.m.
All are welcome to join us. A short meeting will be followed by coffee or tea while we enjoy two short videos in keeping with the spirit of this Jubilee Year – one about Pope Francis’ call for poor nations’ debt to be cancelled and another on the Cry of the Earth and the Cry of the Poor.

Guest Speaker: to talk on the importance of insects
After the meeting at 11 a.m. we will welcome Lu-Wei Spinks, Biodiversity Community Engagement Officer at the City of Greater Bendigo, to tell us all about the importance of insects in the environment and introduce the little native “Scented Sundew” and some of our beautiful and precious native orchids. Followed by a light lunch.

Hope to see you there; all welcome.

RSVP to Vyonne McLelland-Howe on 0408 414 036 by 6 June.
